public policy priorities

First Nations Rights
The Disciples Centre for Public Witness stands with its ecumenical and interfaith partners to promote public policy that ensures and facilitates just and respectful relationships between Aboriginal, Inuit, and Métis peoples and non-First Nations peoples. Such policy should recognize First Nations' rights to land and self-determination.

Climate Change/Ecological Justice
With our ecumenical and interfaith partners, we affirm the need for better stewardship of God’s creation.  As part of that stewardship, we call on our government to make meaningful progress in dealing with climate change and to provide aid to vulnerable populations affected most by climate change and the efforts to deal with this world-wide threat.

Just Peacemaking
Peace and reconciliation lie at the very heart of the good news proclaimed by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. In partnership with the ecumenical and interfaith advocacy community, the Centre urges our leaders to seek peace, security and justice among all nations and peoples.

Healthcare
With our ecumenical and interfaith partners, the Centre supports the basic principles of medicare:  universality, accessibility, comprehensiveness, portability, and public administration.  The Centre also supports reforms aimed at creating a more holistic, community-based, and prevention-oriented health care system.  Based on this people-first approach to health care, the Centre joins our ecumenical and interfaith partners in opposing privatization and its profit-first approach.

Fair and Just Trade
In partnership with our ecumenical and interfaith partners, the Centre urges the Canadian government to put human rights, economic justice and community collective rights at the front of its trade, investment and economic policies and legislation.

Ending Poverty
The Centre joins our ecumenical and interfaith partners in calling for policies that would put an end to poverty in this nation and throughout the world.  This includes government action to secure the social well-being of all God’s children in terms of food, clothing, shelter, transportation, health, education, and culture.
